Since reading The Bear and the Nightingale some years ago, I've been hungry for Imperial Russia novels, especially solid, fantasy ones.
New year, new list of lush, atmospheric, and lyrical books.
I forced myself to go through the book, hoping it would improve. But the writing was too much. Too many metaphors that pulled me out the scene, things like "my jaw was hanging by a shoelace." Poor writing overall, which is surprising for Mafi. Her other books were superb.
It was a good book and I read it in one sitting, but I did think that the book relied too much on cliches and stereotypes, and less on true Viking-age mythology and powerful character
4 stars I loved how Vengeful capitalizes on the world and character from Villains #1, while making things badder, darker, and more, well, vengeful.
4 stars Vicious is a superhero-supervillain twist where you can't quite tell who's a hero and who's a villain.
