Ask Baba Yaga: Otherworldly Advice for Everyday Troubles

I loved it! I’m not an advice column reader, but this was a perfect read. Baba Yaga had that distinct, gritty feel to her words, as you would expect, but with that wise grandmother feel I’d want her to embody. It was a perfect read, and a timely one, on being your own woman, Baba Yaga style.

READ IF YOU…

  • Want something original and unique
  • Enjoy advice columns
  • Love Baba Yaga retellings or twists

TitleAsk Baba Yaga | Author: Taisia Kitaiskaia   Rating: 5/5

What a unique and original read! I’ve never thought of making Baba Yaga that gritty, but wise grandmother, but this was perfect. In some versions of Baba Yaga, she is indeed grandmotherly and doles out words of wisdom, but in more recent retellings, she is more insidious and less helpful.

In this book, she is wise and witty, and the perfect person to dole out the bitter truth – with style.

In age-old Slavic fairy tales, the witch Baba Yaga is sought out by those with a burning need for guidance. In contemporary life, Baba Yaga—a dangerous, slippery oracle—answered earnest questions on The Hairpin for years. These pages collect her most poignant, surreal, and humorous exchanges along with all-new questions and answers for those seeking her mystical advice.

I immediately ordered the sequel to the book, and googled the original advice column (since obsolete), but seriously, this book was so unique and such a witty and quick read, but with heavy and helpful truths. I found what Baba Yaga had to say is perfect wisdom for any woman, any age, at any stage in life.

With a strange, otherworldly style, poetic clarity, and striking honesty, Ask Baba Yaga contains beautifully skewed wisdom to be consulted in times of need.

The advice Baba Yaga dishes out includes

  • how to love yourself
  • how to live on your own and be happy
  • how to stop seeking attention
  • how to be happy with yourself and be forgiving
  • how to attract others to you
  • and so much more!

Perfect holiday gift.

Dear Baba Yaga,
I think I must crave male attention too much. I fear that, without it, I would feel invisible.

BABA YAGA:
When you seek others this way, you are invisible nonetheless. Yr shawl is covered in mirrors in which others admire themselves; this is why they greet you so passionately. It is good to be seen, but it is better to see. Find a being to look hard into, & you will see yrself and what is more than you.
