31 Days of Spooky Reads: Mothers, Mansions, and Mayhem: Voices in the Snow

I’ve read other books by Darcy Coates and enjoyed them, but Voices in the Snow was disappointing. I expected more dystopian, more apocalypse, and less overdone wendigos and zombies.

READ IF YOU…

  • Want a thriller set in winter
  • Like old mansion settings
  • Are in the mood for a wendigo/zombie-type book

I’ve read other books by Darcy Coates and enjoyed them, but Voices in the Snow was disappointing. I expected more dystopian, more apocalypse, and less overdone wendigos and zombies.

To be fair, I don’t enjoy wendigo/zombie stories, so I’m biased. Still, the narrative was cliche, the characters stereotypical, and the writing mundane.

The main characters were also unlikable. They were cardboard-cut stereotypes. The dialogue was stinted, and their actions vapid. Even the backstory was so unoriginal, made no sense, and offered nothing to keep my attention.

The only reason I finished the book was because the writing itself was paced enough that I wanted to keep going, and I kept expecting the book to improve – which it did not.

Not worth the read – try other Darcy Coates’ books, such as Craven Manor.
